Rowland S. Howard (1959 - 2009)
A sad day... Rowland S. Howard, amazing and influential guitarist for The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, and many other adventurous musical projects, succumbed to liver cancer yesterday. His Wikipedia page has been updated with full details.
RIP, Mr. Howard. | |||||||||||

An incredible guitar player, and an awful loss. I just can't say how much The Birthday Party records meant to me as they came out.

Welp, upon further reading, looks like Mr. Howard was only tangentially involved with The Bad Seeds. I don't own much of their material, and he has a credit on the great "Let Love In", but it is for backing vocals on one track and not guitar. My musical tastes are somewhat coarse, and I'm more of a Birthday Party guy. Sorry for any confusion!
I found an interesting 12" in my collection yesterday, with one side credited to Lydia Lunch and the Honeymoon in Red Orchestra. It is not the same as the "Honeymoon in Red" album project, but does feature Mr. Howard's guitar. I haven't played it in years and have no recollection of what it sounds like, and I anticipate giving it a spin when I get home from work today. | |||||||||||

Sad news. The Birthday Party were a great band. I'm still hoping to find the album by The Boys Next Door on vinyl at a reasonable price ("Shivers" is a wonderful song.)

I'd hold out for that reasonable price - 'Shivers' is very much the high point of "Door, Door", and the band are still finding themselves. Their follow up "Boys Next Door / The Birthday Party" is where things really kick off.
