Question for Sarban fans

I enjoyed reading The Doll Maker and Ringstones and I'm considering purchasing a copy of The Sacrifice and Other Stories. I want to know a little about the stories and if it's a worthwhile purchase.

I'm biased, of course, because I published The Sacrifice... But I think that the stories in that collection are actually stronger than most of those in Ringstones. They are very effective, quite different from each other, and in case you were wondering, they are completely finished tales (as opposed to the fragmentary material in Discovery of Heretics). If you've previously enjoyed his work you won't be disappointed.

All the best

Re: Question for Sarban fans

I'll be reviewing The Sacrifice and Other Stories on my blog in the near future (this week sometime, I hope), and can post a link here once it's done.

Noonday Stars: a blog about horror fiction. Recent content includes essay on the new edition of Ligotti's The Agonizing Resurrection of Victor Frankenstein and Other Gothic Tales.

Re: Question for Sarban fans

"Capra" and "A Christmas Story" are the only stories I found to be weak in Ringstones. I read an unenthusiastic synopsis of "The Khan" somewhere before I read the story. I must admit that I wasn't too excited about reading a tale about a woman encountering a bear lording over a harem! I ended up pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. Tartarus recently reprinted The Doll Maker and Ringstones, is there any chance of The Sacrifice being reprinted in the near future?

Re: Question for Sarban fans

I read Sarban's short novel The Sound of His Horn many years ago and enjoyed it very much. It was chosen for the book Horror 100 Best Books. I know I have a copy of his Doll Maker and Other Tales of the Uncanny somewhere, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Yes -- we plan to put all of his work back into print over the next year.

Re: Question for Sarban fans

That's great news. I think I'll wait and purchase from Tartarus. I know I'm not alone in being grateful to Tartarus Press for keeping authors like Sarban and Robert Aickman (a favorite of mine) in print.

Thanks
Adam

Re: Question for Sarban fans

Number 14, one of the stories in The Sacrifice, is probably my favourite of Sarban's work. (The other stories in the book are also good.)

Re: Question for Sarban fans

A little later than expected, I've reviewed The Sacrifice and Other Stories. As I say in the review, I haven't read Ringstones, The Sound of His Horn, or The Doll Maker, so I can't compare it to those based on personal experience. But I liked The Sacrifice a lot, particularly the title story, and can't imagine that these four novellas aren't every bit the equal of the work published in Sarban's lifetime.

Also, this seems like a good place to mention that Tartarus has made several Sarban titles available as e-books.
