Re: Movie Recommendations

Thank you for recommendations Miguel. Since Secrets, I'm trying to stay updated on films from Argentina, or at least to watch everything with Ricardo Darín in.

I enjoyed immensely Wild Tales, I like the best Hit-and-Run story and last one - Wedding - it could be one of the most romantic things I'v seen in my life.

Re: Movie Recommendations

Well, Ricardo Darín stars in both El Aura and El Secreto de Sus Ojos, so watch them. Also, he stars in Nueve Reinas (2000), which was remade in Hollywood as Criminal in 2006. The director of both El Aura and Nueve Reinas was Fabián Bielinsky, who died in 2006 of a heart attack. He was 45 years old and was working on a new film with Darín, so it was a real tragedy.

Also, watch the Spanish film La Isla Mínima (2014).

By the way, I happen to know the actress who played the husband-to-be's lover in the Wedding segment of Relatos Salvajes; she is astonishingly beautiful.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I will make a list of my favorite crime films/TV series; I recommend each and everyone of them. I will be excluding The Wire though, because even though it is the best series I've seen, it is more of a sociological study than a pure crime fiction.

Films:

Memories of Murder (2003)

El Aura (2005)

Zodiac (2007)

La Isla Mínima (2014)

TV Series:

Wallander (2008-2015)

Red Riding (2009)

Southcliffe (2013)

The Fall (2013-)

Re: Movie Recommendations

My wife and I love Wallander, but we've only seen like six, or so, episodes on Public Television. How many episodes are there?

I've just looked it up. Actually, I've seen nine and there appears to be 3 more in the works.

Have you seen Mother (2009)? It's directed by Joon-ho Bong, who made Memories of Murder, which you have on your list. Another unforgettable film.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I went to the library a couple of weeks back, to see if they stock a DVD of Farewell, My Concubine. Predictably, they didn't. Unpredictably, they had a copy of The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq, of which I don't think I was aware before. You can't, I thought, find The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq while looking for Farewell, My Concubine, and not take it out. So I did.

To be honest, I didn't have high expectations for it. It seemed like, as a 'vehicle' film, it had great potential to be very bad. In fact, when I watched the first twenty minutes, I thought it might be a damp squib, and stopped it to do something else. But I was intrigued enough to watch more later, and have now finished it (at the third sitting).

Perhaps surprisingly, Houellebecq is not a bad actor, and the self-parody isn't the clumsy kind that is really an inverted self-congratulation.

It's hardly a roller coaster ride, but if you have time for it, it's a bit like having to stay at some lost uncle's house for a week, and not doing anything in particular there, but discovering that you actually really enjoy it.

Absolutely candid, carefree, but straightforward speech becomes possible for the first time when one speaks of the highest." - Friedrich Schlegel

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw Duke Of Burgundy last night (from director of Berberian Sound Studio), it's a lot like Morgiana but with a totally different type of story. It's very cosy, autumnal and beautiful; starts off seeming to be entirely a mood piece but the plot becomes increasingly important.
It's a bit too long but it's an unusual pleasure to see something like this at a cinema.

Re: Movie Recommendations

"Starry Eyes" is the best horror flick I've seen in a long time.

I second this recommendation. A throwback to some of the better horror films of the late 60s and early 70s. Thanks, teguififthzeal.

This is mainstream, but I recommend Nightcrawler. It touches on themes in such movies as Taxi Driver, Network, and Cronenberg's Crash. I'm confident that the restaurant scene up until the sky dancer will be considered classic cinema one day.

Re: Movie Recommendations

I saw Nightcrawler recently too and it was a lot of fun. As well as those films you mention, King Of Comedy has been mentioned a lot in discussion.

Recently saw Imamura's Ballad Of Narayama, it's pretty good. A story about mountain farmers with strange traditions, a few hundred years ago. It's worth reading about the making of the film, the cast and crew braved severe weather and cultivated land that hadn't been used for a long time. But most shocking of all, the main actress got four teeth removed for the film.
