Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

My book of occult detective stories featuring the non-canonical incompetent son of Thomas Carnacki is published today. As a promotional offer, the ebook edition is free to download for five days starting now. The book is also available as a paperback from all Amazon outlets and elsewhere 🙂

Hope you enjoy!

Re: The William Hope Hodgson thread

Does anyone else besides me find it somehow difficult to pronounce 'Hodgson'? The thick 'dg' (as in 'lodge') followed by the clean 's', demands some major acrobatics of tongue and lips. I have no problem pronouncing 'Hodg...sen', with a short pause in between the 'dg' and 's'. But 'dg' followed lightning fast by the 's', ... my mouth finds that gymnastics quite difficult. To give an idea, if the cheek and mouth is compared to a slab of clay, that first is crushed from the sides, with pouting lips, to pronounce the 'dg', and then must be squeezed down flat, with wide mouth, for the 's'. I trip over the 's', somersault, and land on my head; somewhat akin to the animations in Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Perhaps the 'dg' in 'Hodgson' is only half pronounced? Or, is his name simply pronounced 'Hod-sen"? That would make it a lot easier.
