I have nearly completed my marathon real-time review of Steve Rasnic Tem's ONION SONGS, wherein I mention, inter alia, TL's CATHR, Tem's 'Green Dog' syndrome, 'the old man process' that affects some of us from childhood etc.
One of the stories I describe as an 'orgasm of despair'...

It's nice to see someone talking about Tem here. I have always found his work deeply disquieting and strange, and while perhaps of a slightly different bent to Ligotti philosophically speaking, his particular strain of carefully observed, hyper-personal absurdism with its tendencies toward circular nightmare-logic and intellectualised body horror resonate with me for similar reasons. I think the key difference here is how each approaches the world: Ligotti's characters tend to be lonely wanderers, wry observers and agents of change; conversely, as an adoptive father himself, Tem's characters tend to have more ties to the mundane world, or at least the status quo they feebly pretend is mundane. Thus, the manner in which the writhing beneath the surface of things is exposed is quite different.
