Customs
More bad news for Stateside members of TLO.
US citizens ought to be aware of the recently implemented "Trump tariff" which has doubled, sometimes tripled, postage fees of arriving parcels. Updates from British, Irish and European presses have been disheartening. Ebooks should be unaffected, then again, who knows? Bummer.

Re: Customs
Based on this link, bound books might not be affected. I always thought Europe publishers have a branch in the US for storage and when there's a US order they just ship interstate.

I hope that holds true.
The article is dated 2019 October, and new tariffs activated 2020 July. Hopefully, several of the publishers will comment here on TLO. Most of their websites have been recently modified to indicate the new rates. Even for shipments going to the same continent (North America), the US rates are higher than the Canadian.

I order books from a few of the presses mentioned on this site. Offhand, Snuggly is the only press I can think of which has a US located distribution center.

Re: Customs
According to this shipping cost will rise because the US got a problem with the UPU (Universal Postal Union) favoring China and declared an increase in its terminal rates.

Re: Customs
That is an insightful article, TALP. Thank you.
I hope book dealers and presses take note. Especially in regards the next increase due in 2021 01. If buyers can wait - which goes against the grain of our Amazon derived "I want it now!" attitude - then presses could consolidate orders into a monthly block and shave costs. Maybe. Either way, according to how I read that article, rates for US customers doubled this 2020 07, and will go up again 2021 01. This time for all. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. Thanks again for researching this, TALP.

Re: Customs
The future is uncertain even in states. I heard news of USPS going bankrupt and Trump admin's refusal to bail them out. Amazon and Ebay sellers/buyers might see shipping delay and an increase in postage come September.
If people don't get their stuffs we will see more riots everywhere.

Re: Customs
Dear all,
as you might imagine there has been quite a bit of mail between various UK small press publishers on this topic but I am only speaking for myself on this forum. Basically, a book which was £16+ to send to the US is now £24+ and everyone (including other shippers) are raising their prices to cover this increase, which was caused by the good ol' US of A. Together with fewer aircraft in the skies to actually carry the mail, it is a perfect storm of longer shipping times and everyone pays more for the privilege. Some books are print on demand, so in some of those cases Lulu (or whoever) print a US ordered book Stateside, a German ordered book in Germany etc etc, and that obviously saves international postage, but for limited edition h/b's that's not possible as they are lithographically printed at 'proper' printers. There is no real network of US distributers taking bulk orders for books (ie more than about ten maximum) and even if such a thing did exist probably by the time you have shipped them in bulk, they repack them and add a mark-up it would probably be nearly the same price. Also, if 'others' pack your books, will they do as well as I might - they don't care as much as the publisher does and more time/better packaging reduces profits for them. What happens if a book gets damaged? It's a nightmare thinking about it, so at present, it is all a horror and it's probably not going to get much better. There might be more planes soon but when was the last postage rate decrease? Until I change my fickle mind, my 'policy' will be as it has always been; to produce nice looking ltd editions of things I (and hopefully others!) might like. I am also a collector so I know what its like to pay "how ****ing much!!?" for shipping, but we all know that books are like drugs. if you want it, you gotta have it and if you gotta have it you have to pay for it. What else can one do? REGARDS! J
