My vote for the most nihilistic pre-Ligotti tale might go to Norman Spinrad's 'No Direction Home', which is about how depression is not actually a medical syndrome but merely an objective sanity, and how life is only bearable when we intoxicate ourselves into thinking that being deluded is normal and that our delusions are base reality.
