It worries me a little because several elements sound like typical Hollywood compromises: adding Cthulhu; a seemingly superfluous romance (to show the main character as a heterosexual family man? Yes, that's quite cynical of me); action film bits that sound a tad cheesy; and scenes to make it more like Carpenter's The Thing.

None if this prevents a good film but I'd rather the filmmakers did something entirely different or made something inspired by Mountains Of Madness. I don't think Lovecraft stands to gain much from this. If we must help out writers via film adaptations, there are many authors who could benefit more. Personally, I'd prefer documentaries.

I don't know about this one; I like Del Toro, so I am conflicted about this. The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth were great movies, I liked the two Hellboy films and I really want to see the upcoming Crimson Peak. I think he is capable of delivering a great version of At the Mountains of Madness, but I would love to see The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society take a crack at it too.

I think Del Toro's horror credentials are exaggerated. I've liked his films, but I don't see anything in his work that recommends him above numerous other directors so far as a Lovecraft adaptation goes.

The only advantage to having his name linked to the project is that it might get the film some decent funding.

I think he understands a lot of things better. His use of special effects is a great deal more sophisticated than anyone else in the big budget biz today.

According to IMDb, he was a special makeup effects artist in 8 movies and a TV series; I love how he ditched CGI and used costumes in the Hellboy movies.

I have not been happy with the last del toro movies i saw. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was disappointing, pacific rim moreso. they seemed like a sizeable step down from his work in the Hellboy and Blade franchises, not unlike the difference between tim burton's alice in wonderland and his Edward Scissorhands.

My views towards CG are changing - particularly given the recent trend in horror films to essentially forego special effects period to stay in keeping with the artistic preference for practical effects. There are some things were practical effects look better, but I think CG is rapidly catching up. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was a good example of CG, although I agree it was a lukewarm film overall - but one that could have been worse using Subspecies type stop motion or the costumed men seen in the original made for TV movie. Of course, I'm working in computer animation, and am kicking around going forward with my own zero budget horror film using CG...so I'm biased.
