Re: What other central european authors do you read?
In the field of non-fiction, I've enjoyed reading Mircea Eliade and Ioan P. Culianu. I'd also like to recommend Zbigniew Herbert's book Still Life with a Bridle: Essays and Apocrypha, about 17th-century Holland reflected through paintings by the Dutch masters. One of the most profound books I've ever read about visual art.
