"The Frolic" to be Produced as a Short Film

Plans are underway to film a 16mm short film adaptation of Thomas Ligotti's short story, "The Frolic". This is not an amateur production, but is instead an independent film endeavor featuring a professional director and actors. The film is currently in the financing and pre-production phase, with filming and release slated to occur in 2006. Distribution will target notable film festivals, theatrical release, television and direct DVD sales. The goal for the filmmakers is to make this short and then expand it into a full-length feature film.

A film prospectus has been generated and TLO has been authorized to selectively distribute the document to interested parties. Please note that this is a confidential document for review by potential investors. There is a minimum investment unit required to participate and inquiries should be limited to individuals seriously interested in participating financially. Requests for an electronic copy of the prospectus should be sent via Private Message or email (tlo@ligotti.net). Please note that neither Thomas Ligotti nor TLO is an active party in the financial procurement and production of this film.

This is really exciting news - TL really deserves to see some of this stories translated into film, given that film has a tremendous ability to expose "hidden" literature to a wider audience. I'm really looking forward to this film version of "The Frolic"!

Excellent news! Now I must read "The Frolic" for sure. Is this story in the book Shadow? I should just go check it myself probably.

It will be amazing to see a Thomas Ligotti film!!!

My story NOWHERE TO GO was published by PS PUBLISHING in a book titled POSTSCRIPTS #14 in England in 2008. Let me know if you've read it. I self-published eight short stories on audio-cassette in 1999 titled, fittingly, BARRY WOOD'S SHORT STORIES. And a few other short stories in little obscure publications -- which I forget their titles.

Re: "The Frolic" to be Produced as a Short Film

I already expressed my excitement about this project in the shoutbox as well as in the chatroom, but I have to repeat it.

When the film is finally finished, it will definitely be one of the most important turning points in TL's life as a writer. Finally, not only may he have a chance to be recognized by a broader public, but also be considered by more and more critics throughout the world.

I hope the outcome will be successful enough to provide basis for the full-length feature film!

Re: "The Frolic" to be Produced as a Short Film

Yes, Slawek, you're absolutely correct. This will bring Thomas Ligotti attention that the print world just can't possibly do--at first. But once the film is released--and independent releases can be extremely efficient, it will bring a flood of true Thomas Ligotti fans wanting his books and wanting more. As soon as I read about the film being produced I thought about Cats with Hands and how that film's name is familiar to millions.

I'm exceedingly proud of Thomas Ligotti.

Re: "The Frolic" to be Produced as a Short Film

I, too, am excited about the prospect of a Thomas Ligotti story being filmed. One hopes that the work will not be a travesty. The one I really want to see done is Mr. Ligotti's own scripting of "The Last Feast of Harlequin." He mentions this in an interview reprinted in The Evil Entwines (Extended Version!) by John B. Ford and Guests.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

####ing sweet! Ooo this should be interesting. "The Frolic" being turned into film, Blood Meridian is supposedly in talks of being turned into a film directed by Ridley Scott(!), and I heard a rumor a year ago or so that "At The Mountains of Madness" might be made cinematic.

excitement abounds!

Del Toro's doing a very to-the-word version of AtMoM, yes. Oh, these next two years are going to be awesome for Lovecraftians.

Good! it better be to-the-word. I don't care what the senseless masses think. It will rule all.

on a side note of me mentioning Blood Meridian turned into a film, Tommy Lee Jones owns the rights to it becoming a movie...hm!
