I would like to change the above Rhys Hughes story in my original list for another Rhys Hughes story: A RAPE OF KNOTS - that I have just read in his 'Journeys Beyond Advice' collection and reviewed here.

Joel Lane formally acknowledged its influence upon his novella "The Witnesses Are Gone" as his printed footnote within the book of the novella itself.

Re: Create your own short story collection!

- Since I posted my list of essential weird british fiction, I realized that two stories I read since compiling the list years earlier, Quentin S. Crisp's 'Ynys-y-Plag' and Stephen Laws' 'The Crawl' are both very deserving of a place therein.

Re: Create your own short story collection!

Yes, this is a most excellent thread.

Until I assemble a list, which may be never, due to my bad memory of titles and authors, I would have to include THE INTERLOPERS by Saki (H.H. Munro) This story so affected me as a child that I never could forget it. A spine-tingling ending.

I've only read a couple of Saki's stories but they are brilliant and one of a kind.. I need to delve deeper..

Re: Create your own short story collection!

I have bookmarked this already remarkable thread and will attempt to read every story I've seen mentioned that I haven't already read!

Thanks to everyone!

I'm mulling over my own dream-anthology list.

"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Create your own short story collection!

- Some truly excellent potential anthologies here, I must say! Reading over all these lists reminded of one I compiled myself several years for my own amusement, comprising my own essential selection of British weird fiction from 1900 to the present day, in two volumes:

1900 - 1945

The White People - Arthur Machen
Count Magnus - M. R. James
The Willows - Algernon Blackwood
Thurnley Abbey - Perceval Landon
The Wind in the Portico - John Buchan
The Voice in the Night - William Hope Hodgson
Smee - A. M. Burrage
The Room in the Tower - E. F. Benson
Blind Man's Buff - H. R. Wakefield
Tarnhelm - Hugh Walpole
Whittington's Cat - Lady Eleanor Smith
The Tower of Moab - L. A. Lewis
The Clock - W. F. Harvey
The Terror on Tobit - Charles Birkin
Randalls Round - Eleanor Scott

1945 - 2010
Couching at the Door - D. K. Broster
Podolo - L. P. Hartley
Curious Adventure of Mr. Bond - Nugent Barker
Cushi - Christopher Woodforde
Cwm Garon - L. T. C. Rolt
Ringstones - Sarban
Not After Midnight - Daphne du Maurier
Men Without Bones - Gerald Kersh
The Island of Regrets - Elizabeth Walter
Pages from a Young Girl's Journal - Robert Aickman
Remember Your Grammar - Simon Raven
The Farmhouse - David A. Riley
The Hands - Ramsey Campbell
Vrolyck - Mark Samuels
The Devil's Funeral - Reggie Oliver
