Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Orwell was an artist and honest observer. It wasn't the first time an artist was forced to admit to things he would rather not.

Liberals believe more laws on human nature will bring Utopia.

I...

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

What I mean is simply that liberal philosophy doesn't accept man's nature is not rational. The communists put it in a vice of laws to achieve desired obedience to the State. Fascism is the end...

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Fascism always comes from the Left. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, all used fascist techniques of control. So did Pol Pot. Liberals and communists believe in the perfectibility of man. When that doesn't...

A Bad Guy Passes

Charlie is dead.

It took too long and he got off easy. Such is life.

The Manson legend was created by fake news, a concept that didn't even exist in 72. Geraldo and others spoke endlessly...

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Perhaps not, James lol. If a well known Liberal had written Red Hook it might well have been hailed as a brilliant portrait of right wing paranoia. Don't forget Lovecraft wrote "Eryx" which reads...

Re: Absences and Inhumanity: Six Works of Abstract Horror

Unless it's a piece of crude political propaganda, it's a mistake to judge art by politics.

Would "The Colour out of Space" have been a different story if Lovecraft were a liberal? I doubt it. ...

Re: LAIRD BARRON

Joanna Russ once explained why critics could turn nasty--and often did.
THERE'S TOO MUCH CRAP.
It's that simple, friends.

Re: Very Unusual News of the Day

I've always liked guns but really what can you do with them if you're not a hunter? Target practice, even if you're a great shot, grows boring after a time. There are collectors who collect books...

Re: Very Unusual News of the Day

I still support Trump but this is sheer stupidity and worse.

Should we glorify a different kind of serial killer? Like Trump's sons?
I've always favored the death penalty for poachers of these...

Re: Arthur Machen

Can't help but make a comment on the WT writers.

Writers like Wandrei, Long and Keller (not usually identified as a WT writer) produced some of the most remarkable horror fictions I've ever read. ...

Re: Robert E. Howard story question

The title was Howard's. He heard of the old legend from a black maid or cook at the Howard home (I forget which) and it fascinated him.

I always loved the title.

Re: Arthur Machen

Ringstones, my favorite work by Sarban, always reminded me of Henry James. But, yes. if you dig deep enough the Machen influence is there. A good choice.

Re: Robert E. Howard story question

Chrissy Hynde liked the title well enough lol. She used it in "Back on the Chain Gang." Personally, I like it very much.

Re: Arthur Machen

Just curious. What are your favorite Machen influenced stories? Bob Howard certainly wrote a few as well as his classic "Worms of the Earth." Peter Penzoldt believed "The Whisperer in Darkness"...

Re: What is the saddest short story you've ever read?

The saddest short story I've ever read? The first one I wrote at the age of 14. Hands down the saddest.

No wonder I took a 40 year vacation.

Re: Robert E. Howard story question

A fine if less horrific version of Howard's tale. Man, I loved Thriller...they did so much Arkham House material.

Re: Robert E. Howard story question

You should go, Mr. Veech, if circumstances permit. I traveled to Swan Point in the early 70's and immediately walked to Lovecraft's grave without a map! Great memories are made from such journeys....

Re: Opinions on Dracula by Bram Stoker?

Good Post, Matt, Thanks.

I gave up reading critical commentary on Stoker years ago. It's tedious and often obscene. When a writer with too much time on his hands --and an agenda as well --tries...

Re: Opinions on Dracula by Bram Stoker?

Another Stoker classic: It gets off to a slow start but Jewel of Seven Stars is a fine novel. My favorite Mummy tale.

Stoker also wrote a couple of classic short horror stories--"The Squaw" and...

Re: Opinions on Dracula by Bram Stoker?

I remember Michael Shea loving J. Ramsey Campbell's The Inhabitant of the Lake and saying he refused to regard those stories as juvenile, he liked them too much. He found them delightful.

Re: Opinions on Dracula by Bram Stoker?

I've never cared for Frankenstein in the least. It
was a plodding piece of work from Go.
